Simple pleasures

Working in a new job is always difficult and my new job is no exception. There are always the inevitable mistakes that one makes. Happily my early mistakes seem to be minor and the first performances that have been my responsibility to sell have met their goal. I don't take credit: that belongs to Verdi, Puccini, Wagner and the performers. But had they not, I would have assumed the blame.

One moment of great satisfaction though was when I awarded the prize to the winner of our free ticket raffle: a 7-year old girl who had come to one of our free events. She used the pair of tickets we gave her to take her mom to the concert.

These are the good days.

That is always such a great feeling. At my first job out of college, which I HATED, I received a letter from a mother who was returning proofs to ensure that she did not get charged for them because she could not afford them. Ordering senior photos would have caused her children to go hungry. Not wanting she or her son to miss out I picked my 4 favorite proofs and ordered a selection of photos. I then sent the proofs with a letter explaining that she did not owe me a cent but would receive photos in the mail in just a few weeks. A week late her 17 year old son sent me a letter thanking me for my understanding and wishing that there were more gneerous people out there like myself. For a job that sent me home in tears every night that was a good day and I will always keep that letter.

That was a pretty extraordinary thing that you did. It's nice to have that feeling (even in a bad situation) that you've accomplished something.
